John Mellor of Roodhouse is fatally hurt -
Roodhouse, May 9

John Mellor, 68, well known Roodhouse resident, was fatally injured Monday afternoon while cutting down a tree at the residence of Mrs. Lucy Ballard in this city.  Mr. Mellor had felled the tree, but one limb had fallen onto the house. He climbed to the roof of the building to remove the limb. In some manner he was knocked from the roof and almost instantly killed.
Coroner Russell Shields, of Greenfield, was notified and conducted an inquest at the W. E. Reeve Funeral Parlors where the body was taken. The jury found that Mr. Mellor came to his death from injuries to the chest. It was found that the aged man had received a broken chest bone, the ribs piercing the heart and lungs. Members of the coroner’s jury were: Ray Doyle, foreman, Fred Ruyle, John Shaw, Sr., Andy Johnson, A. W. Whittaker, Charles Burroughts, clerk.
Mr. Mellor was born in Roodhouse and has always resided here. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Sadie Copley, Mrs. Elmer Mueller, Roodhouse; Miss Rosie Mellor, Jacksonville; William Mellor, New Mexico; his wife preceded him in death eight years ago. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters; Miss Elizabeth Mellor, Kansas City; James Mellor, Kansas City; Mrs. Emma Stevens,Chicago; Robert Mellor, Jacksonville, and Mrs. Marie Landreth, Peoria, Ill. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elmer Mueller. Rev. Milton Wilson of the M. E.
