"Johannes grew up in New Amsterdam and learned the medical trade from his father. [false. He grew up in Wiltwyck and his father died when he was four years old.] He was Bergen County's first medical doctor. He moved to Hackensack about 1685 and practiced from his home located on what became known as Doctor's Creek. He must have done fairly well, because in 1698 he and a partner, David Provost, bought 250 acres of wilderness land to the north in an area the Indians called Hoghakas. The purchase prices was equivalent to $10,000. At some point, he moved to what became Ridgewood, there's no evidence he practiced medicine there, it's where he died in 1729."

Johannes was four years old in 1665 when his uncles were appointed his guardians after the death of his parents.

In 1688, his home was used as a court room for the trial of small causes by an act of the governor and council. His home was located on the Hackensack River. At the time it was part of Essex Co. His land was used as a survey reference 9 Aug 1715 (Papers and Proceedings of the Bergen County Historical Society, Issues 3-7, 1907)
