- In the Watertown Daily Times 23 Jan 1956 Farmer Killed By Falling Limb Thomas Hutton, Plessis, Had Been Cutting Wood Near Farm Plessis, Jan. 23 -- A 55-year old Plessis farmer is dead after being struck by a falling limb in a woodlot near here Saturday. Thomas Hutton of the Creek road died of a fractured skull at 6 pm yesterday in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown. According to Technical Sgt. John Johnson of the Alexandria Bay state police sub-station, Mr. Hutton was cutting trees alone with a gasoline chain saw in the woodlot on the Cecil Collins farm next to his property when the accident happened. Sergeant Johnson said that Mr. Hutton is believed to have just cut down a tree with a 20 inch trunk and as it fell it apparently turned on its stump breaking off a three-inch diameter limb from a nearby tree. Sergeant Johnson said it is believed that the falling limb struck Mr. Hutton on the back knocking him down, his head striking the trunk of the tree he had felled. Mr. Hutton's wife became alarmed when her husband failed to meet her at Plessis about 4:30 pm as previously arranged. She called the Collins home, learning the family had not seen him. Mr. Collins went to the woodlot where he found Mr. Hutton lying unconscious near the tree. The injured man was taken to Edward John Noble hospital at Alexandria Bay and then at 2:25 am, Sunday to the Watertown hospital for treatment by a neuro-surgeon. Mr. Hutton was born Aug. 28, 1900, at Plessis son of Mrs. Lydia White Hutton, and the late Thomas Hutton. He grew up in the Plessis area and attended schools at Plessis.
