Unmailed Letter dated 11 May 1864
Dear wife,
I will now try to write a few words to let you know that I am still in the land of the living. We have done some fighting since I wrote to you and on the 7th of this month I got a slight wound in my side but nothing dangerous. I hope to get to Washington soon where we will get good care, then I will write to often. I have not had a chance to write before as I have been 2 nights and 2 days in the ambulance. If you get this, you will know that I am still alive. I can't write anymore so good bye.
WWV
I don't know when I will get a chance to send this but I hope you will get it soon. Forgive me for not writing more but I will write you soon
Yours as ever
