Letter dated May 11th, 1864
May 11th 1864
Fredericksburg, Virginia
Dear wife
I now hasten to inform you that on the 6th day of this month we met the enemy and I got a slight wound through my right side. It is nothing dangerous, but it will keep me from the field the rest of the summer and give me chance to come home. I was in the ambulance from Saturday night till Monday night. I lost everything in getting off the field or I would have written on a leaf of my book, but this is better. We expect to get to Washington in a few days. There we will have good care and I will write to you as often as I can. It is most dark now and I am getting tired so I will close this. You must not fret about me now for I am not dangerous and I will write often and will probably come home before long.
Yours as ever
