Letter dated May 31st, 1864

Harewood Hospital Washington DC
Dearest wife,
I now sit down to write a few lines to let you know how I am getting along. My wounds are getting along first rate. I expect to get a furlough before long and I will let you know when I get (it). I am recommended and expect to be examined tomorrow, but I may not get it for 2 weeks yet, but it will come some time and it will be good when it does come. I despair of getting a letter from you, as I have not heard from you since the 8th of this month. I am getting so that I walk all over the grounds and going very fast. By the time I get home I shall be quite well. Won't that be a happy time if it is but a short one? There I can't write any more this time so I will bid you good by hoping to see you before long.
Yours as ever W.W.vanAmber
